Reason Behind Power crisis in Kashmir

Power crisis in Kashmir
Power cut down is the biggest problem that everyone in Kashmir has to face in winters.
This year's the same started with the start of winters particularly in Rural areas.

In this Blog we will inform why the JKPDD ( jammu and Kashmir Power Development Department) failed this year to resist the power shortage.

Reason Behind Power crisis in Kashmir

In a worsening Electricity, Kashmir finds itself grappling with a severe shortage, leaving homes in darkness and rural areas particularly hard-hit by unscheduled load shedding.

A senior officer from the Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) revealed that on Friday, forced curtailment reached a staggering 1000 MW, indicating a substantial space between power demand and power supply.

The officer who wished not to be named said, “It doesn't need rocket science to understand that the power curtailment schedule announced by KPDCL is hardly followed. The widening gap between power requirement and availability leaves no room for adherence to schedules. The only viable solution is to purchase more power to meet the burgeoning demand.”

No segment of the region has been spared from the power crisis, with rural areas experiencing the harshest impacts.

As the power crisis escalates, residents are left grappling with the consequences, raising concerns about the immediate need for effective measures to bridge the widening gap between power demand and supply in Kashmir.

Kashmir needs 2,200 MW of electricity for round the clock power supply and 1,650 MW to adhere to the curtailment schedule. “We are able to provide 1,400-1,500 MW in Kashmir valley every day,” said KPDCL chief engineer Javed Yousuf.

The Jammu & Kashmir administration last week said the Union Territory is facing a power crisis as its power projects are generating less electricity than before due to the dry spell in summer. The administration is taking steps to address the issue, it added.

How much electricity does J&K require? How much power are the UT’s projects generating? What is the administration doing to address the problem? We take a look.

Importance of Power in Winters in Kashmir

 Heating Homes and Spaces

Electricity powers heating systems that keep homes warm and comfortable during the frigid winter months. From electric heaters to central heating systems, reliable access to electricity is crucial for maintaining a habitable living environment.

Lighting the Darker Days

With shorter daylight hours, lighting plays a pivotal role in combating the winter gloom. Electricity ensures that homes, streets, and public spaces remain well-lit, contributing to safety and a sense of security.

Powering Essential Appliances

Kitchen appliances such as stoves, ovens, and microwaves, which are essential for preparing warm meals, rely on electricity. The ability to cook hot, nourishing food becomes particularly important during the colder season.

Electronic Devices for Connectivity

In an era dominated by digital communication, electricity is indispensable for powering devices like laptops, smartphones, and tablets. These devices not only provide entertainment but also enable remote work and keep us connected with loved ones.

Medical Support

Electricity is vital for operating medical equipment, especially for those with chronic illnesses or conditions that require continuous monitoring. Winter brings health challenges, and a stable power supply is crucial for medical support.

Winter Storm Preparedness

Electricity is instrumental in powering appliances like snow blowers and generators, aiding in winter storm preparedness. This is particularly important in regions prone to heavy snowfall, where access to electricity can be a lifeline during emergencies.

Transportation and Infrastructure

Electrically-powered transportation systems, such as trains and electric vehicles, rely on a consistent power supply. Additionally, infrastructure maintenance during winter, such as snow removal and street cleaning, is facilitated by electrically-operated machinery.

Water Heating

Hot water is a necessity for personal hygiene, and electric water heaters contribute significantly to meeting this need. The availability of warm water is especially crucial during the colder months.

Emergency Services

Electricity is integral to the operations of emergency services, including hospitals, fire departments, and police stations. These services are essential year-round but become even more critical during winter when accidents and health issues may be exacerbated by the cold.
